A big thank you to North Yorkshire County Council

The question was simple and to the point, the answer was glowing praise for North Yorkshire County Council, the Local Enterprise Partnership and the contractors. The occasion was Parliamentary Oral Questions to the Secretary of State for Communities and Local Government on 27 February 2017.

Nigel Adams MP asked, "Local authorities come in for a bit of stick in this Chamber from time to time, but the Secretary of State will be fully aware of the tremendous work that North Yorkshire County Council did in Tadcaster over the past year. Will he take this opportunity to thank North Yorkshire and David Bowe in particular, who did so much great work in ensuring the restoration of the bridge? Will he also thank the local enterprise partnership for its help?"

Sajid Javid, The Secretary of State for Communities and Local Government replied, "I was pleased to join my hon. Friend and many of his great constituents at the reopening of Tadcaster bridge. It was lovely to see so many young people celebrating that moment. I am more than happy to join him in congratulating the county council and the local enterprise partnership on their work. I also congratulate my hon. Friend on all his work to help bring that bridge back to life."

The bridge collapsed in the evening of 29 December 2015 shortly after it had inspected by Greg Clark, the then Secretary of State for Communities and Local Government. It was therefore especially significant that Sajid Javid was able to be part of the celebration when the bridge was re-opened on 3 February 2017. The stone arches of the bridge had been re-built with local stone and as part of the repair the bridge had been widened to give Tadcaster the benefit of a safer bridge while maintaining its historic character.
